Heather Sellers grew up in an extraordinarily difficult home, finding beauty and connection in the natural world. Field Notes from the Flood Zone is a double love letter to a beautiful and fragile landscape and to the vulnerable young girl who grew up in that world.

From the front lines of climate catastrophe, a poet witnesses the sea encroaching upon her doorstep.
Heather Sellers, born and raised in Florida, experienced a challenging upbringing in a household marred by domestic violence. However, the natural world became a sanctuary, offering solace and a profound connection to the world around her. She embarked on a journey of discovery, attempting to learn the names of every flower, insect, fish, shell, and tree she encountered. Unfortunately, that world has vanished.
In this collection of poems, Sellers mourns the loss of this world while observing the daily lives of people and animals in her low-lying coastal town. As storm clouds gather with increasing intensity, towering high rises soar into the sky, casting a shadow over the community's future. The uncertainty surrounding the community and the very essence of life as we know it hangs in the balance.
Field Notes from the Flood Zone is a heartfelt tribute to both the picturesque and delicate landscape and the vulnerable young girl who grew up within it. It serves as an elegy for the two great forces that shaped her life: the heartbreaking struggles within her family and the collective loss of a precious treasure—our stunning, singular, desecrated Florida, and all its remnants of beauty.
