- More about Finnair
Aero Oy, later rebranded as Finnair, is one of the world's oldest surviving airlines, established in 1923 and operating domestic and international flights. It used German Junkers aircraft during its early years and continued to use them even after Finnish shareholders bought back shares. During World War Two, Finland was occupied by Russian troops, followed by the Germans and then the Allies, but Aero Oy managed to continue its operations. After the war, Finnair was the first carrier to connect Europe with Asia via a polar route, making it a major player in the airline industry. However, it was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic like most other airlines, but is taking steps to ensure its further growth once the pandemic is over.

Aero Oy, later rebranded as Finnair, stands as one of the world's oldest surviving airlines. Established in 1923, the airline commenced domestic flights alongside routes to the Nordic and Baltic regions. Initially, Aero Oy relied on German Junkers F 13 aircraft, as Junkers Flugzeugwerke AG held a stake in the airline. Despite Finnish shareholders acquiring Junkers shares, the airline continued to utilize Junkers aircraft, including the G 24 and Ju 52. During World War Two, Finland was occupied by Russian troops, followed by the Germans and then the Allies. Nevertheless, Aero Oy managed to continue its operations. Post-war, Finnair capitalized on its strategic location to initiate routes to the Soviet Union. Moreover, it became the first carrier in the world to establish a polar route connecting Europe with Asia, offering a shorter alternative to traditional routes via Russia or the Persian Gulf. As China opened up the new Silk Road, Finnair's passenger and cargo flights to Asia became the airline's primary source of income. However, like many other airlines, Finnair faced the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. While this remains an ongoing issue, Finnair is taking proactive measures to ensure the airline's sustainable growth once the pandemic subsides. Comprising over 140 images, this book chronicles Finnair's history, from its inception to its resilience over the years.
