This magnificent gold-tooled design originates from a singular 1990s binding crafted by book conservator Scott Husby, who skillfully assembled fragments from the early 1800s to create a stunning new cover for this copy of Shakespeare's First Folio. Originally published in 1623 in London and comprising 36 of Shakespeare's plays, Mr. William Shakespeare's Comedies, Histories, & Tragedies (known as the First Folio) stands as one of the most influential and groundbreaking books in history. It is the sole reliable text for nearly 20 of Shakespeare's plays, 18 of which had previously been unpublished, including The Tempest and Twelfth Night. Presently, there exist only 235 surviving copies, derived from an initial print run of approximately 750. The rarity and profound impact of the First Folio have elevated it to the status of one of the most valuable printed books globally, with a specimen fetching over $6 million at an auction in 2001. The Folger Shakespeare Library boasts an impressive collection of 82 copies of the First Folio, making it a treasure trove of literary heritage. We are thrilled to present this exquisite and one-of-a-kind binding as our inaugural reproduction from the Library's unparalleled collection.
