The future energy supply is heavily reliant on the development of a base-load capable, environmentally friendly, and virtually inexhaustible source of geothermal energy. If it were possible to increase geothermal energy production in line with this potential, Germany could achieve 100% climate-neutral energy generation by 2050. To achieve this goal, the Dolomitkluft joint research project, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy from 2016 to 2018, aimed to establish a new and improved reservoir model for the Upper Jurassic carbonates in the Northern Alpine Foreland Basin.

The result of this project is the dissertation by Mr. Stockinger, which geomechanically and numerically characterizes the deep geothermal reservoir in carbonate rocks, including limestones and dolomites, in the Upper Jurassic of the Northern Alpine Foreland Basin at depths exceeding 4,000 meters. This book specifically focuses on fracture initiation, propagation, and hydraulic conductivity around a borehole and the controlling factors such as in situ stress, the existing discontinuity network, and the geomechanical rock properties. By successfully addressing these critical aspects, Mr. Stockinger has made significant contributions to the retrieval of deep geothermal energy at its point of origin, namely the deep borehole.
