This book presents a robust defense of an event-causal theory of libertarian free will, contending that the belief in such free will holds significant importance, if not an essential role, in supporting certain fundamental values. The author begins by arguing that the possession of libertarian free will is necessary for deserving praise, blame, reward, and punishment. He presents his version of libertarian free will, known as the indeterministic weightings view, as coherent and compatible with a scientific, naturalistic understanding of human nature. However, he acknowledges that there is currently insufficient evidence to establish the existence of human beings possessing this type of free will. Despite this, the author maintains that there are compelling value-based and axiological reasons to believe in the existence of libertarian free will and to live and act as if we possess it.
In the second part of the book, the author explores the significance of believing in libertarian free will in the context of criminal justice, the appreciation of justified pride, and the enhancement of our relationships.
