By June 1993, Washington, D.C.'s Fugazi had reached a thunderous peak in popularity and influence with the release of their third full-length album, In on the Kill Taker. The quartet had released two EPs (combined into the classic CD 13 songs) and two albums (1990s genre-defining Repeater and 1991s impressionistic follow-up Steady Diet of Nothing) in just five years, showcasing their incredible creative roll and astounding increasingly large audiences with their energetic live performances. When the album debuted on the now-SoundScan-driven charts, Fugazi had never been more in the public eye. However, few knew the difficult journey they had taken to achieve this breakthrough. Disappointed with the sound of their self-produced Steady Diet, the band recorded with legendary engineer Steve Albini but ultimately scrapped the sessions and recorded at home in D.C. with Ted Niceley, their brilliant and under-known producer. Interestingly, Fugazi chose to release In on the Kill Taker at a time when Nirvana and Sonic Youth were bringing the American rock underground into the media spotlight and "breaking" punk in various ways. Despite the challenges and competing influences, Kill Taker became an alt-rock classic, defying expectations and standing in stark contrast to the mainstreaming of a culture and worldview that the band held dear.

This book includes new interviews with all four members of Fugazi and members of their creative community, providing a deeper insight into the making of this iconic album and the band's profound impact on the music world.
