- More about Games, Gambling, and Probability: An Introduction to Mathematics
The human brain has difficulty dealing with probability and chance, but a greater understanding of probability can help develop intuition and make more informed decisions. This textbook offers an introductory probability course with a focus on games to make learning fun and engaging. It covers standard content, game theory, sports mathematics, and blackjack, and emphasizes a just-in-time mathematics approach. The book includes exercises, tables, and appendices, and is written by a professor of mathematics who enjoys playing board games.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that the human brain often encounters significant challenges when dealing with probability and chance. A deeper comprehension of probability can foster the intuition required to approach risk with the capacity to make more informed and superior decisions.
The initial four chapters encompass the conventional material typically covered in an introductory probability course, albeit presented in a distinct manner and sequence. The chapters that follow introduce various games, explore diverse concepts related to the law of large numbers, and encompass a wide range of mathematical topics that are less commonly found in such textbooks. The incorporation of games serves the purpose of making the book and course enjoyable.
Since many of the early games discussed in this book are casino games, the study of these games, coupled with an understanding of the material presented in subsequent chapters, should serve as a reminder that gambling is an unfavorable endeavor. It is advisable to view placing bets in a casino as a form of entertainment expenditure, rather than expecting to generate profits. While winning can indeed be a delightful reward, it should never be presumed or relied upon.
In preparation for the Second Edition, several notable changes have been implemented. A new chapter on Game Theory has been added to enhance the coverage of this topic. Additionally, a new chapter on Sports Mathematics has been introduced to cater to the interests of students passionate about sports analytics. The chapter on Blackjack, which was previously Chapter 4 in the first edition, has been relocated to a later position in the book. Furthermore, a reorganization of topics has been undertaken to enhance the flow and coherence of the material. New sections on Arkham Horror, Uno, and Scrabble have been included to broaden the range of games discussed. Furthermore, an abundance of additional exercises has been added to further reinforce the learning experience.
The primary objective of this textbook is to serve as a valuable complement to the inquiry-based learning movement. In my perspective, concepts and ideas tend to resonate more deeply with readers when they are motivated through engaging and interesting approaches. Thus, we employ questions about various games, encompassing not solely casino games, to drive the mathematical concepts, and I would argue that the writing emphasizes a just-in-time mathematics application.
