  • More about Gender and Position-Taking in Henrician Verse: Tradition, Translation, and Transcription

Henrician verse systems of communally created, coded position-taking involved tradition, translation, and transcription, allowing for new readings that emphasize the interpretive range available to contemporary reading and writing communities. This restoration demasculinizes our approach to Henrician verse by de-emphasizing individualized self-fashioning or authorial intent and focusing on communal production and shared sociopolitical engagement.

Format: Hardback
Length: 254 pages

Tradition, translation, and transcription in Henrician verse played a significant role in systems of communally created and coded position-taking. By recognizing this system as a vast network of production and reception in which women assumed diverse roles, we can gain new insights into Henrician verse that highlight the interpretive possibilities available to contemporary reading and writing communities. This restoration not only challenges the traditional view of Henrician verse by providing a more equitable consideration of gender roles in that social context but also emphasizes the de-emphasis of individualized self-fashioning or authorial intent in favor of a focus on communal production and shared sociopolitical engagement. Rather than creating a code, this system establishes systems for coding and recognizing position-taking. These communal systems provide a platform for the intersection of readers, writers, transcribers, and composers, as well as between King and courtier, in a space that interrogates, constructs, and disrupts power within the Henrician court.
