The Class 303 and Class 311 units were used by British Rail from the start of electrification in Glasgow in 1960 until the advent of more modern multiple units. One Class 303 has survived into preservation, and part of a Class 311 unit is based at the Summerlee Heritage Centre.

From the commencement of electrification in Glasgow in 1960, British Rail employed these units. Initially, they operated between Helensburgh Central and Airdrie, as well as various branch lines in the North Clyde area. Subsequently, in 1962, they were introduced to the South Clyde area, functioning from Glasgow Central to various destinations. This comprehensive book encompasses both classes during the BR era, as well as their subsequent privatization and beyond. As newer and more advanced multiple units, such as the Class 314 from 1979, gained prominence, the usage of the Class 303 and Class 311 declined. While one Class 303 has been preserved at Boness, a portion of a Class 311 unit is located at the Summerlee Heritage Centre in Coatbridge, situated near Glasgow.
