Sultan Nazrin Shah's book, Charting the Economy and Striving for Inclusive Development, is a groundbreaking study of the economic and social changes in the natural resource-rich Malaysian state of Perak over the last two centuries. During the first half of the 19th century, globalization and international trade networks expanded, and Perak played a significant role. Its tin was in high demand, and foreign capital, labor, and technology propelled its growth. By 1900, Perak accounted for almost half of Malaya's tin output and a quarter of world output, making it the Malay peninsula's commercial hub. However, the global rubber boom in the early 20th century led to the collapse of Perak's tin and rubber industries and the migration of many of its young and skilled people. The book explores various sub-themes, including economic geography, colonialism's institutional legacy, federal government centralization, economic agglomeration, and human migration, which shaped Perak's fortunes in economic cycles and ultimately led to its decline. By analyzing Perak's characteristics and extrapolating lessons from other formerly wealthy industrial centers, the book suggests that Perak can regenerate itself and once again emerge as a prosperous region.
