  • More about Greece (1941-1974): Years of Occupation, Years of Strife, and Years of Exclusion

Greece experienced years of brutal foreign occupation,a savage civil war, dominance by those on the Right of the ideological spectrum, and a military dictatorship from 1941 to 1974. This period was characterized by constant interference by many, including the foreign occupiers, the British, and the Americans, and resulted in the persecution, persecution, imprisonment, torture, exile, and killing of certain segments of the population. Despite foreign interference, some aspects of the exclusivist state have been eliminated, and the political landscape is more moderate today, giving Greeks hope for better days.

Greece (1941-1974): Years of Occupation, Years of Strife, and Years of Exclusion delves into the history and politics of Greece during a tumultuous period marked by years of brutal foreign occupation, a devastating civil war, dominance by individuals on the Right of the ideological spectrum, and a military dictatorship. A defining feature of this era in Greek history was the persistent interference of various actors, including, of course, the foreign occupiers, the British, and the Americans. Furthermore, during these years, certain segments of the population faced persecution, imprisonment, torture, exile, and even death due to their resistance against the occupiers, or their ideological beliefs and political standing. These events have contributed to the perception among many Greeks that their modern history is challenging and "unkind."

While foreign interference may have persisted, particularly since the onset of the financial crisis in 2008-2009, significant strides have been made in dismantling aspects of the exclusivist state following the collapse of the military dictatorship in 1974. Despite a brief rise of extremist ideologies on both the Left and Right wings, the current political landscape in Greece is more moderate. This provides grounds for optimism among Greeks, as they believe that better days are ahead.
