Married couples with disabilities can find personal satisfaction and pleasure in their marriages, despite handicaps such as low mental ability, deprived backgrounds, or psychiatric and physical disability. This study by Ann and Michael Craft, published in 1979, was the largest group of married subjects with a mental disability studied in this country at the time and found that in three-quarters of the partnerships, both spouses had a mental disability. Despite facing significant challenges such as low mental ability, deprived backgrounds, or psychiatric and physical disabilities, most married couples with disabilities manage to derive immense personal satisfaction and pleasure from their marriages. This phenomenon holds particular interest for professionals and social workers who, as part of their duties, are tasked with providing support and services to individuals with mental disabilities.

Originally published in 1979, Ann and Michael Craft dedicated four years to researching a sample of 45 marriages featuring at least one spouse with a mental disability. Notably, in three-quarters of these partnerships, both spouses were affected by mental disabilities. This study represented the largest group of married individuals with mental disabilities examined in the country at that time, and the Crafts' findings held significant importance. With the growing trend toward normalization, marriage was becoming an increasingly viable option for an increasing number of people with mental disabilities.

The primary objectives of the study were to present the authors' research on married couples with mental disabilities, to propose strategies for enhancing service delivery to such couples, and to provide valuable material for teaching purposes.
