Join one swift hare and one leisurely tortoise, along with a whole host of other animals, to discover who will be the winner of a most unusual race. Award-winning illustrator and author Helen Ward's gorgeous artwork breathes new life into the classic fable, now in a redesigned paperback edition.
Once upon a time, in a lush green forest, there lived a speedy hare named Harry and a slow-moving tortoise named Tom. They were both friends and often spent their days wandering around, enjoying the sunshine and the fresh air.
One day, as they were strolling through the forest, they heard a loud commotion. It sounded like a race was about to begin, and both Harry and Tom were excited to participate.
The race was set to be a most unusual one. It would take place across the entire forest, and the participants would have to navigate through a series of obstacles, including rivers, hills, and dense forests. The hare, being quick and agile, was confident that he would win easily. However, the tortoise, being slow but steady, was not deterred.
As the race began, Harry took off like a lightning bolt, leaving Tom far behind. Tom, however, did not give up. He knew that he had to conserve his energy and not tire himself out too quickly. He walked slowly and steadily, taking his time to navigate the obstacles.
Meanwhile, Harry was getting closer and closer to the finish line. He could feel the excitement building inside him as he raced towards the end. But just as he was about to cross the finish line, he heard a loud crash behind him.
Turning around, he saw that Tom had fallen into a deep pit. He was unable to move, and it looked like he was out of the race.
Harry felt bad for his friend, but he knew that he had to finish the race. He ran as fast as he could to the pit and tried to help Tom out. But Tom was too heavy, and Harry was unable to lift him out.
Just as Harry was about to give up, he heard a voice calling out to him. It was a wise old owl who had been watching the race from a nearby tree.
"Don't give up, Harry," the owl said. "You can still win this race."
Harry was skeptical, but he decided to listen to the owl's advice. He took a deep breath and tried to think of a way to help Tom.
Suddenly, he had an idea. He ran back to the starting line and picked up a small rock. He then ran back to the pit and dropped the rock into it.
The rock hit the bottom of the pit and created a small tremor. Tom, who was still lying there, felt the tremor and was able to move his body slightly. Harry quickly grabbed Tom and pulled him out of the pit.
As they continued to race, Harry and Tom were both exhausted. But they were also determined to win. They raced past the finish line together, and the crowd cheered loudly as they crossed it.
In the end, it was Harry who won the race. But he was not the only winner. Tom had also won, because he had shown that slow and steady wins the race.
From that day on, Harry and Tom became even closer friends. They knew that they had learned an important lesson about the value of perseverance and hard work. And they also knew that they could always count on each other to help them in times of need.
And so, the speedy hare and the slow-moving tortoise lived happily ever after, in a lush green forest, where they continued to explore and enjoy the wonders of the world around them.
