  • More about Haribana

The Haribana style was created in May 2020 by floral designer Harijanto Setiawan during the global pandemic, when the supply of fresh flowers and other materials was limited. It is a highly architectural design statement with a single flower as focal point, incorporating architectural concepts such as structure, balance, shape, line, color, texture, rhythm, and harmony into floral art. The book contains 65 stunning Haribana pieces designed by the master himself and hopes to fill a unique void in floristry and develop into a specific style that is adapted worldwide.

In the midst of the global pandemic that struck in May 2020, a unique floral design style emerged in Singapore. Floral designer Harijanto Setiawan, known for his extravagant creations adorned with abundant flowers, found himself confronted with a scarcity of materials. This unexpected challenge forced him to reevaluate his design approach and find innovative ways to create high-quality and impactful designs with the limited resources available.

One could argue that the pandemic was a blessing in disguise for Harijanto. It reignited his passion for floristry, allowing him to reinvent himself and showcase a different side of his artistic personality. He was able to step away from the extravagant norms that people had become accustomed to and return to his roots as an architect. While his imagination remained boundless, the practical realities of the pandemic dictated that his ideas must be realized within the confines of the pandemic.

The name "Haribana" itself carries a subtle reference to Ikebana, the traditional Japanese art of flower arrangement. However, it is important to note that Haribana cannot be strictly classified as Ikebana, as even the most free-spirited Ikebana schools raised objections to this. Haribana, therefore, represents Harijanto's own interpretation of a fusion of Ikebana with architectural elements and style.

In Haribana pieces, architectural concepts such as structure, balance, shape, line, color, texture, rhythm, and harmony are seamlessly integrated into floral art. It appears as if the two disciplines were destined to converge, rather than being imposed upon each other. Steel grass stalks, reminiscent of the structural support systems found in architecture, serve as the foundational elements, providing stability and strength. The greenery is meticulously shaped to create a delicate facade against which a single flower can truly shine.

Haribana pieces are a testament to Harijanto's creativity and adaptability. He has managed to blend the artistry of floristry with the principles of architecture, resulting in stunning designs that captivate the viewer with their visual appeal and architectural sophistication. Through his innovative approach, Harijanto has demonstrated that even in the face of adversity, the beauty of nature and the limitless possibilities of design can thrive.
