Loodeen Winders, a six-year-old boy growing up in the early 1920s in a market town in the west of Ireland, is experiencing a rapid growth in his maturity. The turbulent times of the Free State soldiers patrolling in front of the Workhouse and the nuns looming over Lewy and his classmates, including the orphans, who are portrayed as shadowy figures with slobbery and weak physical appearances, are causing him concern.

Despite these challenges, Lewy's mind is filled with vivid memories of encounters with Violet and Brazenface Rosaleen McInally in the woods. These encounters play on his mind even as he struggles to comprehend the loss of his beloved grandfather. As a treat, he sneaks behind the screen at the Pictures, where his father creates sound effects for the Hunchback of Notre Dame using his Jazzdrums.

Lewy's mother is a skilled magician, capable of repairing any mishaps that occur, such as when he breaks his arm while walking the wire in their backyard circus. On the fortieth anniversary of Eoghan O Tuairisc's death, this English translation of Lewy's frank and funny voice provides a valuable witness to his place and time.
