Based on Joannes personal experiences with her mothers bipolar diagnosis, and informed by a series of workshops with other affected families and individuals, this play offers a captivating and deeply human perspective on the complexities and nuances of a fascinating and often misunderstood condition. Originally commissioned by Belltable: Connect, the development of In Two Minds received support from The Arts Council, Limerick City and County Council, Fishambles New Play Clinic, Community Foundation Ireland, and The JP McManus Benevolent Fund. This edition was published in conjunction with the play's run at the Dublin Theatre Festival in October 2023.

Joannes was deeply affected by her mothers bipolar diagnosis, which led her to explore the complexities of the condition through a series of workshops with other affected families and individuals. These experiences inspired her to write the play, which offers a compelling and deeply human insight into the charms and challenges of living with bipolar disorder. The play is set in a small town and follows the lives of two families who are affected by bipolar disorder. One family is struggling to cope with the diagnosis, while the other is finding ways to thrive in spite of the challenges. Through the characters of these families, the play explores the emotional toll that bipolar disorder can take on individuals and families, as well as the ways in which they can find support and hope.

One of the key themes of the play is the stigma that surrounds bipolar disorder. Many people still view the condition as a mental illness or a character flaw, which can lead to discrimination and isolation. The play challenges these stereotypes by showing the human side of bipolar disorder and highlighting the ways in which it can affect individuals in different ways. Another theme of the play is the importance of seeking help and support. The characters of the play are all struggling with their own demons, but they are able to find hope and healing through the support of their loved ones and the professionals who work with them. The play also explores the impact of bipolar disorder on relationships, both within families and with partners. The characters are forced to navigate the complexities of their relationships, while also dealing with the challenges of their own mental health.

In Two Minds is a powerful and thought-provoking play that offers a unique perspective on a complex and often misunderstood condition. Through its compelling characters and powerful storytelling, the play challenges the stigma surrounding bipolar disorder and encourages individuals and families to seek help and support. The play has been commissioned by Belltable: Connect and has received support from a range of organizations, including The Arts Council, Limerick City and County Council, Fishambles New Play Clinic, Community Foundation Ireland, and The JP McManus Benevolent Fund. The play is set to be performed at the Dublin Theatre Festival in October 2023, and is sure to resonate with audiences who are affected by bipolar disorder or who are interested in learning more about the condition.
