The book offers a comprehensive and holistic examination of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in the context of migration, encompassing a multi-stakeholder, multi-disciplinary, international, and evidence-based approach. It brings together diverse perspectives and multifaceted responses to the management of ICT-based migration, exploring their intersections, conflicts, and synergies. This groundbreaking work serves as a significant addition to the field, addressing critical debates surrounding humanitarianism and securitization in the reception of migrants, as well as delving into the role of digital technology in facilitating migrant integration.

The authors delve into contentious areas such as the utilization of new technologies, including drones, Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms, and face recognition, within the framework of smart border solutions. While these technologies are widely praised for their efficiency and effectiveness in migration management and border security, they are also heavily criticized for their disregard for the fundamental human rights of migrants. The research presented in this volume aims to depart from the euphoric appraisals that technology has brought about, instead critically examining the both the bane and boon, benefits and afflictions, highlighting the barriers and solutions, including several under-researched aspects of digital surveillance and the digital divide.

This edited volume has been developed as part of the MIICT project, which received funding under the EU Horizon 2020 Action and Innovation programme through grant agreement No 822380. The project aims to foster the integration of migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees through the use of ICT solutions, offering a strategic approach to providing digital services at the EU, national, and local levels. By bridging the gap between academia and front-line practitioners, the book provides a theoretical, policy, ethical, and methodological framework for understanding and addressing the challenges and opportunities associated with ICT in migration.
