This groundbreaking book challenges scholars to reexamine international conflict and its management, aiming to advance the field by directly theorizing about and examining the intricate interplay between conflict events and conflict management attempts. Despite decades of dedicated research, the study of international conflict and its management remains fragmented in three fundamental ways. Firstly, scholars fail to fully integrate international conflict dynamics within studies of conflict management, despite the former shaping the latter. Secondly, existing research tends to prioritize one conflict management strategy, such as mediation, at the expense of others, such as adjudication, while neglecting the interconnectedness of these strategies. These strategies are not independent of each other; rather, they exist on a single menu from which potential third parties can choose. Consequently, third parties implicitly or explicitly consider and select among these strategies when deciding how to manage a conflict, leading to comparisons and the incorporation of sequencing and interaction elements. Lastly, researchers often treat conflict management efforts, even within the same conflict, as independent events, overlooking the fact that some efforts, such as adjudication or arbitration, follow and explicitly relate to earlier efforts, such as negotiation or mediation. In short, the elements of sequencing and interaction play a significant role in conflict management, yet they are rarely considered by scholars.
This book offers immense value to scholars and researchers in the fields of Political Science, International Relations, and Conflict Management and Resolution. The chapters included in this book were originally published as a special issue of International Interactions, showcasing the latest insights and advancements in the field. By delving into these complex dynamics, this book provides a valuable contribution to our understanding of international conflict and its management, paving the way for more effective and nuanced approaches to conflict resolution and peacebuilding.
