- More about International Theory and German Foreign Policy
This book aims to bridge the gap between scholarly discussions of German foreign policy and broader theoretical debates in International Relations. It argues that while there has been a lively discussion about 'new German foreign policy, it has not engaged substantially with international and foreign policy theory, especially with respect to its recent developments. The book reviews the recent literature on German foreign policy and suggests that while there is a general decline in the academic study of German foreign policy, there is a range of novel, theoretically sophisticated but often disconnected scholarship on the margins. It contributes to this emerging work by providing conceptual interrogations, critical discussions, and evaluations of Germanys actorness and the environment in which it operates, and proposing applications of less familiar perspectives on German foreign policy.

The central objective of this comprehensive book is to establish a profound and meaningful connection between scholarly examinations of German foreign policy and broader theoretical discussions in the field of International Relations and beyond. While there has been a vibrant and ongoing discourse surrounding the concept of "new German foreign policy," this book contends that it has yet to engage in a substantial manner with international and foreign policy theory, particularly in light of its more recent developments.
Upon reviewing the recent literature on German foreign policy, it becomes evident that the most widely discussed works continue to be predominantly authored by the "Altmeister," a group of scholars who have long held a dominant position in the field for over a quarter of a century. While there is a discernible decline in the academic study of German foreign policy, the chapters included in this edited volume reveal that a diverse range of novel, theoretically sophisticated, yet often disconnected scholarship has emerged on the periphery. This book makes a valuable contribution to this emerging body of work by offering conceptual interrogations that challenge existing research, proposing theoretically grounded alternatives, initiating critical discussions and evaluations of Germany's actorness and the contextual factors that shape its foreign policy endeavors, and proposing applications of less familiar perspectives on German foreign policy.
The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal German Politics.
