The recent history of post-Soviet societies has been profoundly influenced by the successor nations' endeavors to geopolitically re-identify themselves and solidify specific majorities within their borders. As a consequence of these intriguing processes, a diverse range of new ideologies have emerged. While some of these ideologies are uniquely rooted in the post-Soviet context, others share similarities with ideational dynamics observed in other regions of the world. In this comprehensive collection, an international team of contributors delves into the latest theoretical frameworks that construct various post-Soviet majorities, the ideologies that justify them, and the corresponding policy prescriptions.

The first part of the book examines the fixation of post-Soviet state-builders on specific constructed majorities, as well as the symbolic self-identifications, in- or outward othering, and national languages of these imagined communities. The second part focuses specifically on post-Soviet notions of sovereigntism and the ways in which they define majorities, as well as the implications these ideas have on internal and external policies and legal systems. These processes are analyzed in comparison to similar phenomena in Western societies.
