Inverse Utopia explores the urban landscape from the perspectives of modernity and postmodernity, as well as the transformation of cities through commercialization. In his earlier book, Ladders (1997), the author describes the emergence of the dead end as a typical urban manifestation. In the texts of his new book, Inverse Utopia, Pope advocates for the development of architectural and urban forms that respond to contemporary ecological and social challenges. The title alludes to a statement by philosopher Günther Anders: While utopians are unable to bring about the things they envision, the others are incapable of imagining the things they do. The book stands as a standalone volume but can also be read as a continuation of Ladders. A compilation of essays and design projects The urban architecture of modernity and postmodernity Connections between morphology and consumer economy
