This open-access book delves into the methodologies and findings of the third Italian National Forest Inventory (INFC2015). The realization of the National Forest Inventory and the determination of survey objectives fall under the responsibility of the Arma dei Carabinieri. National forest inventories provide statistically derived information on forests across vast country areas. This information finds widespread application at both subnational and supranational levels, encompassing a wide range of spheres and processes. These include the ability to portray the global forest status. Italy embarked on its inaugural forest inventory in 1985, followed by the establishment of a permanent national forest inventory in 2001. This initiative aimed to regularly update statistics. Given the increasing environmental concerns, particularly regarding climate change, estimating forest carbon pools was identified as a primary objective. Consequently, it was named the Italian National Inventory of Forest and Forest Carbon Pools (INFC). The book commences with an overview of the overall organization, definitions, methodologies, and estimation procedures. It proceeds by presenting the key estimates generated by INFC2015, presented in tabular form within the book's chapters. The estimates are accompanied by textual explanations that introduce the subject matter, outline the survey methods employed, and offer commentary on the primary outcomes, supported by graphical representations. The estimates encompass various aspects such as forest area, management and production, biodiversity and protection, forest health, protective and socio-economic functions. A dedicated chapter is devoted to analyzing the role of forests in the carbon balance, as it is crucial for their contribution to climate change mitigation efforts. The book concludes by providing insights into the current dynamics of Italian forests by comparing the estimates obtained.
