In her groundbreaking and highly politicized collection, Kathleen Ossip delves deep into the current state of the United States. She reflects on our diverse reactions to our nation, encompassing irony, infantility, righteousness, and defeat. Ossip's diction ranges from elevated to colloquial, her tone elegant and straightforward. The centerpiece of the book, and its crowning achievement, is the poem "July." Spanning fifty pages, Ossip vividly recounts a road trip from Bemidji, Minnesota, to Key West, Florida, with her daughter riding shotgun. Inspired by the images passing through their car windows and nurtured by intimate conversations and ample time for reflection, the poem unfolds with an entertaining cinematic sweep. It incorporates poems based on bumper stickers, church names, and local shops. Traveling challenges Ossip's beliefs, and she openly shares her doubts and confusions. Kathleen Ossip is an unconventional and formidable wordsmith.
