Keith Haring (1958-1990) is a renowned American artist known for his vibrant paintings, drawings, sculptures, and murals. He gained widespread recognition in the early 1980s New York art scene with his graffiti-inspired drawings, which were often displayed in public spaces such as the Times Square billboard broadcast of his famous Radiant Child in 1982. Haring's instantly recognizable "cartoon-like" imagery drew inspiration from contemporary pop and club culture, as well as from the patterns and rhythms of Islamic and Japanese art, and primitive wall paintings. His work also reflected a deep commitment to social justice and activism, addressing issues such as the AIDS crisis, the Cold War, fear of nuclear attack, racism, the excesses of capitalism, and environmental degradation. This book features around fifty works supported by rarely seen archival photographs, providing a fresh perspective on Haring's art. Three short texts explore various aspects of his practice, and a rolling time-line highlights key social and political events of the 1980s, including the election of Reagan, the rise of hip hop, and the fall of the Berlin Wall. Haring's responses to these events are also included.
