Knowing Britten is a captivating and insightful account of Steuart Bedford's enduring association with both Benjamin Britten the man and his music. This remarkable book, recognized as the 2021 Book of the Year by Presto Music, delves deep into the profound connection that Bedford shared with Britten throughout his life. Bedford's journey with Britten began at a young age, as his mother, Lesley Duff, had the privilege of singing with the English Opera Group in the premieres of The Rape of Lucretia and Albert Herrring in the late 1940s. This close connection with Britten and his partner Peter Pears would shape Bedford's musical career for years to come. After completing his music studies and serving on the music staff at Glyndebourne, Bedford joined the English Opera Group, gradually earning Britten's trust as his trusted surrogate conductor. As Britten's health began to decline, Bedford assumed the responsibility of conducting the premiere performances of several of Britten's final operas, including Death in Venice, which had its US premiere at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Additionally, Bedford conducted the dramatic cantata Phaedra, among other notable works. Through his meticulous research and dedication, Bedford has crafted a remarkable tribute to Britten, capturing the essence of his music and the profound impact he had on the world of classical music.
