These outlaws often sought refuge in the Indian Territory, where there was no law to extradite them. The only law outside of the Indian Territory was that of Judge Isaac Parker, who administered the rules with an iron fist. The gallows at Fort Smith served as a testament to his work. The qualifications required to be a peace officer in the Wild West were often determined solely by an individual's skill with a gun and their courage. At times, the lawmen had to rely on their wits and quick thinking to outmaneuver their adversaries and bring them to justice.
