Originally published in 1963, this comprehensive account, based on a lifetime of firsthand experience with the growing child, encompasses all the situations and challenges that a child, along with its parents and educators, encounters during the first twelve years of life. From the earliest stages of feeding and sleeping to the gradual acquisition of reading, writing, and social adaptation, the book covers a wide range of developmental milestones. Every parent desires to ensure that their child receives the best possible start in life. Unfortunately, at the time, many books intended to address the formative years of a child's development offered incomplete, conflicting, or ambiguous advice. This lack of comprehensive guidance led to numerous pleas for a book that would provide detailed explanations for its recommendations while maintaining warmth and humanity. In response to this need, the author painstakingly crafted a masterpiece that fulfills these criteria.

Beatrix Tudor-Hart's early foray into psychology, which began at Cambridge and extended to Germany and America, was followed by six years of managing her own nursery kindergarten for children aged two to seven. However, in 1933, she recognized the injustice of separating this age group from older children and decided to take a different path. For sixteen years, from 1938 to 1954, she operated a cooperative, non-profit-making school that catered to children between the ages of two and twelve. At the time of the original publication, the author held the position of a lecturer in Child Psychology within the Department of Child Care at the North Western Polytechnic in London.
