Through a Critical Whiteness analysis of canonical and lesser-known works by Charles Brockden Brown to Frank J. Webb, Murray contends that White characters on the threshold of life and death were liminal entities that disrupted established notions of racial belonging in the early US. The fear of losing Whiteness was often expressed through the language of liminality, foreshadowing contemporary White anxieties about marginalization and minority status.
