This remarkable Art Deco design originates from the renowned British bookbinder Sybil Pye (1879–1959). It was meticulously crafted to house a collection of William Wordsworth's poems, intricately illustrated by Pye's lifelong friend Thomas Sturge Moore. Pye, a self-taught artist, embarked on her creative journey in the early 1900s, initially employing naturally colored leather for her creations. As her skills flourished, she graduated to using multi-colored panels, showcasing her artistic evolution. By 1934, Pye had mastered the art of creating intricate covers, featuring up to six different inlays, which were showcased worldwide. Notably, Pye was one of the youngest pre-First World War women binders, and she held a unique distinction as the only binder in England specializing in inlaid leather bindings. In honor of this pioneering woman's contributions to the art of book design, we present this series, a testament to her enduring legacy.
