Loughborough, a bustling market town strategically situated along major transport routes, has a rich history of offering a diverse range of drinking establishments to its visitors and residents. Throughout its existence, the town has been a hub of social activity, boasting a multitude of pubs, taverns, coaching inns, post houses, and alehouses. One notable landmark was the extensive Midland Brewery Company, located on Derby Road, which thrived in the early 20th century. As the town experienced rapid industrialization, the demand for more inns, beerhouses, and off-licences grew correspondingly. By 1889, a staggering 264 establishments were licensed to sell beer in Loughborough. However, over the course of the 21st century, this number dwindled to approximately one-fifth of its peak.
In her book titled "In Loughborough Pubs," author Lynne Dyer delves into the history and fortunes of drinking establishments in Loughborough that existed prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and those that have reopened since then. The book showcases a wide array of historic buildings, including the Loughborough Arms in Baxter Gate, originally a coaching inn on the land owned by the Earl of Moira. The Royal Oak on Leicester Road, constructed to serve the turnpike road, also played host to auctions and inquests. The Paget Arms, a fine red-brick building on the corner of Paget Street and Oxford Street, was built in the heart of a Victorian housing development for workers in Loughborough's expanding industries. Additionally, the book features recently constructed pubs such as The Project in Market Street.
Through her meticulous research and engaging storytelling, author Lynne Dyer takes the reader on a captivating journey through the towns watering holes. These establishments, many of which have preserved the essence and traditions of bygone eras, offer a glimpse into the fascinating history of Loughborough's pubs. The book is filled with quirky tales and fascinating facts, providing an entry point for readers to delve deeper into the rich tapestry of Loughborough's pub culture. Whether you are a local resident or a curious traveler, "In Loughborough Pubs" is a must-read for anyone interested in exploring the social and historical significance of these iconic establishments.
