  • More about Mamma Andersson: The Lost Paradise

Anderssons's paintings are a new genre of landscape painting that recalls late nineteenth-century romanticism while also embracing a contemporary interest in layered, psychological compositions. They utilize a selection of motifs from throughout her career, resembling still lifes, and are part of a self-conscious effort to capture an experience rather than a specific event. Splendid color reproductions bring the textured brushstrokes, loose washes, and stark graphic lines to life on the page.

Andersson's artistic creations redefine the landscape painting genre, blending elements of late 19th-century romanticism with a contemporary fascination for intricate, psychological compositions. Her breathtaking panoramic scenes are inspired by a diverse range of archival photographic materials, film imagery, theater sets, period interiors, and the sparse topography of northern Sweden, where she grew up. The paintings incorporate a variety of motifs from throughout her career, including barren branches, thick-barked pine trees, domestic interiors, horses, and young women. These works, reminiscent of still lifes, contribute to a tradition of serene, dreamlike domestic scenes by Scandinavian artists such as Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864–1916) and Edvard Munch (1863–1944). Part of Andersson's artistic approach is to capture the essence of an experience rather than a specific event, resulting in compositions that are more abstract and liberated.

Splendid color reproductions in the book vividly capture the textured brushstrokes, loose washes, and bold graphic lines, bringing the artwork to life on the page. Additionally, the book includes a new essay by acclaimed author Karl Ove Knausgaard, further enhancing its scholarly and artistic value. The Lost Paradise is published to commemorate an eponymous exhibition held at David Zwirner, New York, in 2020, showcasing Andersson's exceptional talent and contributions to the art world.
