Marek Thee: A Life of Journalism, Scholarship, and Activism
Marek Thee was a remarkable Jewish Polish journalist, scholar, and activist who lived a life marked by resilience, courage, and dedication to social justice. His memoir, titled "Marek Thee: A Life of Journalism, Scholarship, and Activism," provides a captivating account of his journey from narrowly escaping death in the Holocaust to exile in Palestine, where he became deeply involved in the Polish consular service.
On his return to Poland in 1950, Marek Thee took on important roles within the Foreign Ministry and later the Polish Institute for International Affairs. He served as the Head of the Polish delegation to the International Control Commission in Indochina during the late 1950s, a period of significant geopolitical tension and conflict. His experiences in Indochina not only shaped his perspective on international relations but also deepened his commitment to promoting peace and human rights.
However, Marek Thee's life took a tragic turn in 1968 when he lost his job and his Polish citizenship as a result of a nationalistic and antisemitic campaign. Despite this setback, he was able to find refuge in Norway, where he worked for twenty years at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO). During his tenure at PRIO, Marek Thee edited an international quarterly journal, the Bulletin of Peace Proposals, and conducted extensive research on the arms race. His work at PRIO not only contributed to his academic reputation but also played a significant role in promoting peace and understanding in the global community.
In retirement, Marek Thee continued his research and writing at the Norwegian Human Rights Institute, where he remained committed to social justice and human rights issues. His book vividly relates the drama of his life in Poland, Palestine, Indochina, and Norway, providing a profound insight into the experiences of a Holocaust survivor and a dedicated advocate for peace and social change.
"Marek Thee: A Life of Journalism, Scholarship, and Activism" is an open access book that is freely available to anyone interested in learning more about the life and work of this remarkable individual. It is a testament to the power of resilience, perseverance, and the pursuit of justice in the face of adversity.
