- More about Mary Anning's Curiosity
Mary Anning was a poor, uneducated woman from Lyme Regis, England, who made significant contributions to paleontology by discovering the first complete ichthyosaurus skeleton at the age of twelve. Despite facing numerous challenges, including discrimination from male scientists and financial difficulties, Anning's work helped to shape our understanding of prehistoric creatures and the age of the Earth.

Mary Anning was born in Lyme Regis, England, in 1799. Her father, a carpenter and part-time fossil hunter, instilled in his children a love for fossils. When her father became injured and unable to work, Mary dropped out of school and took up fossil hunting full-time to support her family. This became even more crucial when her father passed away, leaving the Annings in debt. At the age of twelve, Mary and her older brother Joe discovered what they believed to be the skeleton of a gigantic crocodile, the Great Croc of legend. Mary spent nearly a year carefully excavating what would later be termed the Ichthyosaurus.
Despite her lack of education, poverty, and being a woman, Mary's remarkable work in fossil hunting led to numerous discoveries that significantly impacted our understanding of prehistoric creatures and the age of the Earth. In this captivating novel for young readers, Monica Kulling brings Mary Anning and her world to life.
