Masks have a rich and complex history, spanning across various societies and cultures throughout history. While they have been used for various purposes, such as tools of control, protective gear, and even as representations of social personas, masks also possess a subversive aspect that challenges the status quo. In the context of extreme transformation, masking has gained renewed traction and urgency, with practices such as online avatars, caricature, camouflaging, face swapping, masquerading, mimicry, protection, ridicule, social makeup, and transformation becoming integral to our everyday lives. This exhibition explores the ongoing radical reshaping of our multiple historical, sociopolitical, gendered, and transcendental identities, questioning the processes through which we shape-shift from one to the other. By highlighting the subversive potential of masking, we aim to shed light on the transformative power of this cultural practice and its ability to challenge established norms and power structures.
