  • More about MASTERCrit

MASTERcrit was inaugurated in 2015 as a hybrid series of events that brought together lectures, critiques, and a charrette, modeled after a traditional Master Class. Invited MASTERcritics, such as MOS in 2015, Andrew Zago in 2016, and Jürgen Mayer H. in 2017, presented project briefs and engaged students in producing artefacts that reflected their responses. The book includes documentation of the workshops and resultant work, as well as briefs and transcripts of conversations.

MASTERcrit, a groundbreaking initiative that emerged in 2015, took the form of a hybrid series of events, seamlessly blending lectures, critiques, and a charrette. Drawing inspiration from the traditional concept of a Master Class, this workshop enlisted the exceptional talents of the school's graduating students, handpicked by the faculty based on their outstanding achievements. These selected students, known as the invited MASTERcritics, hailed from diverse backgrounds and brought with them a wealth of expertise and creativity.

In 2015, MOS was the inaugural MASTERcritic, followed by Andrew Zago in 2016, and Jürgen Mayer H. in 2017. Each of these architects was assigned the challenging task of presenting a project brief to the workshop team, which encapsulated a current preoccupation in their own discursive production. In response, the students were encouraged to produce artefacts that authentically reflected their thoughts and interpretations.

In addition to meticulously documenting the workshops and the resulting work, the book also includes the briefs and transcripts of the engaging conversations that took place during these sessions. These conversations shed light on the dynamic interplay between the MASTERcritics and the students, fostering a rich exchange of ideas and fostering a deeper understanding of the architectural discipline.

MASTERcrit's unique approach not only provided students with a platform to showcase their talents but also facilitated meaningful interactions with renowned practitioners, shaping their educational journey and opening doors to a world of opportunities. Through its innovative blend of theory and practice, MASTERcrit has become a cornerstone of architectural education, nurturing the next generation of architects who will shape the future of the profession.
