She escapes with a party of smugglers towards the North Pole, where they take refuge with the local Eskimo. After a shipwreck, Vera is lost in a storm and finds herself in the underground world of Mizora, where an advanced society of women has eliminated war and poverty. Mizora, a novel by Mary E. Bradley Lane, was first serialized in the Cincinnati Commercial between 1880 and 1881. A decade later, it was rediscovered and published by editor Murat Halstead. Although little is known about Lane, she is believed to have been a dedicated feminist and a talented writer. However, by the time Halstead approached her to republish Mizora, she appears to have had no interest in its novel form. Nonetheless, Mizora remains a pioneering work of feminist utopian science fiction and an early example of the hollow earth subgenre. The novel opens with a description of a breathtaking sky, with clouds of beautiful hues floating in a serene azure sky. The languorous atmosphere, the beauty of the heavens, and the inviting shores create a sense of contentment that is difficult to describe. To enhance the sensory experience, the protagonist, Princess Vera Zarovitch, is greeted by the sounds of sweet music, which includes the mingling of human voices. Princess Vera Zarovitch has led a tragic life. Born into wealth, she studied in Paris and gained a broader understanding of the world beyond Tsarist Russia. Imprisoned for criticizing the state after witnessing her friends' murder at the hands of Russian soldiers, she escapes with a group of smugglers towards the North Pole. Following a devastating shipwreck, their party takes refuge with the local Eskimo, who care for the captain until his death from exposure. Abandoned by the men tasked with bringing her to safety, Vera is lost in a storm. When she awakens, she finds herself in the underground world of Mizora, where an advanced society of women has eliminated war and poverty altogether. The novel is beautifully designed with a captivating cover and professionally typeset manuscript. It showcases Lane's talent as a writer and her vision for a utopian society where women can thrive.
