Fifty-one texts provide valuable insights into the evolution of modernism in Eastern Europe, offering new opportunities for comparative analysis of national cultures. These texts, including essays, articles, poems, and excerpts from longer works, explore the challenges of reconciling individual and collective identities. While critical of the romantic episteme, they exhibit a more sophisticated and critical perspective compared to previous periods. At the same time, they often continue and affirm romantic identity narratives, albeit through different means. Additionally, the volume highlights the ways in which national minorities sought to legitimize their existence by emphasizing their cultural and institutional distinctiveness.
