In Raymond Chandlers beloved novel, Mr. Bowling purchases newspapers solely to discover the latest developments regarding the murders he has recently committed. However, he is fortunate enough to evade detection. On each occasion, he purchases a newspaper to ascertain if anyone suspects him. Unfortunately, the war is ongoing, and the clues he leaves behind go unnoticed. This is a shame, as Mr. Bowling is not a conventional serial killer. Instead, he desires to be caught, hoping that his torment will finally come to an end.

Donald Henderson, an actor and playwright, also wrote novels under the pen name D. H. Landels, but with limited success. During his time working for the BBC in London during the Second World War, his fortunes finally changed with the publication of Mr. Bowling Buys a Newspaper. This darkly satirical portrayal of a murderer was enthusiastically promoted by Raymond Chandler as his favorite detective novel. However, even the author of The Big Sleep could not save it from obscurity. It has remained out of print for more than 60 years.

This Detective Club classic is introduced by award-winning novelist Martin Edwards, author of The Story of Classic Crime in 100 Books. Edwards provides new insights into Henderson's often troubled life and writing career, shedding light on the lesser-known aspects of this renowned author's literary journey.
