- More about Nano-Biofortification for Human and Environmental Health
Nanotechnology has the potential to alleviate food needs for our growing population, but novel agricultural innovations are needed to enhance crop health and yield without harming the environment. Recent advancements in nanotechnology-based agricultural solutions have shown promise in overcoming problems such as fertilizer run-off, low nutrient accumulation, insect and pest control, wastewater treatment, and plant uptake of toxic substances. However, the competence and fate of nanomaterials in soil ecosystems must be considered to achieve sustainable and safe use of nanotechnological products in agriculture. This book highlights recent field research and contributions from academicians in the lab, addressing major aspects related to nanotechnology, biofortification of crops, and human and environmental health.

Nanotechnology has emerged as a promising solution to address the challenges posed by the growing human population and the need to meet food demands. Novel agricultural innovations are essential to enhance crop health, yield, and environmental sustainability. Recent advancements in nanotechnology-based agricultural solutions have demonstrated significant potential in addressing various agricultural issues, including fertilizer run-off, low nutrient accumulation, insect and pest control, wastewater treatment, and plant uptake of toxic substances. However, the consumption of such food crops can also lead to malnourishment and the transfer of toxic substances among humans, particularly in underprivileged and rural populations. Various types of nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes, metal, and metal-oxide nanoparticles, have been explored as agents to stimulate plant growth. These nanomaterials can be used to deliver nutrients or elements to crop plants, which can improve human nourishment. However, it is crucial to consider the competence and fate of nanomaterials in soil ecosystems, as they can enter the environment through both natural and anthropogenic sources. To achieve sustainable and safe use of nanotechnological products in agriculture, similar environmental conditions must be simulated on a lab scale, with careful selection of nanomaterials and their application methods.
