Oliver Reed, a collection of poems by Hannah Regel, explores the brutalization of language and the subjugation of women's voices, bodies, and labor through the figure of the horse. The poems are a hyperbolic pastiche of pleasurable misbehavior, guiding a girl named Sorry through her own undoing while naming new tools for calculated resistance. Regel creates a new order for the ecstatic wreckage of obedience, offering a poetic sensibility that is as at odds with convention as it is equal to the moment. The poems explore our own creatureliness with a deadly curiosity, transforming the actor into a strange muse and guiding presence, the horse into more than an emblem of eros, labor, and suffering, and the young girl's bratty insolence into defiance and stricken. The poems are also watchful and vigilant, offering a means of protection. The second edition of Oliver Reed, published in February 2024, includes a newly commissioned introduction by Olivia Kan-Sperling.
