  • More about On Solid Ground: Why the Earth Isn't as Controversial as You May Think

On Solid Ground is a documentary film that tells the stories of the people who made geological discoveries and the doubters and nay-sayers who have tried to undermine them. It explains why geologists are so sure about the right answer to geological controversies and discusses the logical fallacies used by those who still refuse to accept their expertise.

Format: Hardback
Length: 200 pages
Publication date: 10 March 2023
Publisher: Prometheus Books

On Solid Ground is a documentary film that aims to educate the general public about the knowledge of geologists about the Earth. It will achieve this by presenting the stories of the individuals who made groundbreaking discoveries. Additionally, the film will chronicle the efforts of skeptics and naysayers who have worked tirelessly to undermine our understanding of the Earth. For instance, we know that the Earth is ancient, in part due to the creation of the modern system of dating fossils by William Smith during a bar bet. Eunice Newton Foote, a woman who was passionate about fighting for women's rights at Seneca Falls, discovered the warming properties of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Despite the efforts of Samuel Birley Rowbotham, a conman who convinced thousands of people that the Earth was flat before moving on to sell bogus health tonics, we are confident that the Earth is round.

The film will be structured into nine chapters, each containing three key elements. The first element will be a human story that revolves around a geologic controversy. The second element will provide an explanation of why geologists are confident in their understanding of the controversy. The third element will discuss the logical fallacies employed by those who remain skeptical or unwilling to accept geologic expertise.

By presenting these three components in each chapter, On Solid Ground aims to provide a comprehensive and accessible overview of the knowledge of geologists about the Earth. It will serve as a valuable resource for individuals who are interested in learning more about the Earth's history, geology, and the ongoing scientific debates surrounding these topics.
