A captivating time-traveling genealogical adventure, this novel vividly transports readers to pre-industrial, rural eighteenth-century England. Inspired by a desire to explore his family history, Ian Marchant embarked on a quest that led him to discover a remarkable treasure: a detailed diary penned by his seven-times-great-great-grandfather, Thomas Marchant, from 1714 to 1728. Intrigued by the similarities between himself and the diarist, Thom, Ian delved deeper into the diary, uncovering a rich tapestry of life on a family farm and fishponds. Through immersive detail, he learned about the daily struggles and joys of a bygone era, from the mundane to the extraordinary. However, as Ian dug deeper into the diary, he uncovered a subtext that hinted at a family descended from immigrants, with anti-establishment politics and struggles akin to the challenges facing their country three centuries later. The novel is a unique and exhilarating exploration of time and love, weaving together elegiac moments with consistent humor and deep emotional resonance. Richard Beard, the author of "Sad Little Men," praised it as "a triumph of storytelling, filled with memorable characters and a rich sense of place."
