  • More about Patterns of Im/mobility, Conflict and Identity

Patterns of im/mobility, collective identity, and conflict are closely intertwined, with internal mobility such as traditional or strategic mobilities and mobilities enforced by crisis, conflict, or governmental programs and regimes being analyzed on a cultural and political level. This book provides a comparative perspective on the multifold dimensions of im/mobility in contexts where changing mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion trigger or settle conflicts and social identities are constantly re/negotiated.

Patterns of im/mobility, collective identity, and conflict are intricately intertwined, exerting a profound influence on each other. The movement or mobility of a social or cultural group significantly shapes the formation of identity narratives, a sense of belonging, and relationships with others, while these dynamics in turn influence the im/mobility of the group. These interconnected processes are intricately linked with mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion among groups and power structures involving a diverse range of actors, from local populations to migrants, government institutions, and other intermediaries.

This book primarily focuses on examining patterns of internal mobility, including traditional or strategic mobilities, as well as mobilities enforced by crisis, conflict, or governmental programs and regimes. By venturing beyond the prevailing discourse on transnational migration, it seeks to explore the dynamics of non/integration and belonging resulting from im/mobility on a cultural and political level. This analysis encompasses questions of representation, indigeneity/autochthony, political rights, and access to land and other resources. Through the use of ethnographic case studies from Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Bangladesh, East Timor, and Indonesia, this volume offers a comparative perspective on the multifaceted dimensions of im/mobility in contexts where shifting mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion either initiate or settle conflicts and social identities are continually re/negotiated.

The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Social Identities.
