The demand for guidance in developing and enhancing peer support programs for individuals with mental illnesses is on the rise among mental health providers. Nevertheless, the evidence base in this domain is constrained by a lack of consensus regarding the essential components of peer support. This comprehensive research offers a nuanced perspective on peer support for individuals with schizophrenia. The findings are derived from a realist review of 355 sources and in-depth interviews with experts in the field. Realist review is an evidence synthesis approach that seeks to answer the question, "What works, for whom, and in what circumstances?" The results encompass a typology of critical functions of peer support, including being present, facilitating linkage to clinical care and community resources, advocating for systems change, and providing ongoing support. Documented benefits of peer support include reduced acute care utilization and increased recovery rates. Furthermore, implementation recommendations are provided, such as achieving a critical mass of peer workers, establishing supportive infrastructure, and fostering an organizational recovery orientation. This book is intended for program planners, managers, and researchers who are interested in advancing the field of peer support for individuals with mental illnesses.
