John Preston Pete Hill (1882-1951) was a remarkable early 20th century baseball player who was considered the equal of Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and Tris Speaker in terms of talent. However, his skin color prevented him from playing in the major leagues. Hill was a capable manager and led the Chicago-based American Giants of the Negro League, as well as two expansion teams. He retired from the sport as the manager of the Baltimore Black Sox. This first-ever biography of Hill provides a comprehensive account of his career, set against the backdrop of the turbulent issues of his time, including segregation, women's suffrage, Prohibition, and the Spanish flu. Drawing on contemporary newspaper accounts, the biography offers a unique perspective on the life of a neglected Hall of Famer who made significant contributions to the game of baseball.
