Peter Hujar, a legendary musician, and Elton John, a renowned photographer, have collaborated in a captivating book titled "Peter Hujar Curated by Elton John." This remarkable partnership showcases the profound and exquisitely somber oeuvre of Hujar, while also demonstrating how one artist's eye can shed light on another. Despite his global fame as a performer, Elton John is also an accomplished collector of photographs, possessing a deep and personal appreciation for Hujar's remarkable achievements. Through a selection of 50 photographs, the book offers a comprehensive survey of Hujar's career, showcasing his diverse range of subjects and styles. In his introduction, John writes: "Hujar's humanity, depth, and sensual insights aren't for everyone, and don't need to be, but once his pictures get into your bloodstream, they are impossible to shake." The publication spans nearly two decades, featuring captivating portraits of Hujar's eclectic circle of friends, iconic nudes, atmospheric landscapes, portraits of renowned performers such as Stevie Wonder, Peggy Lee, and Edgar Winter, and a poignant moving image of the artist with his mother. Peter Hujar, born in Trenton, New Jersey, in 1934, relocated to Manhattan to pursue a career in the magazine, advertising, and fashion industries. During the 1970s and 1980s, he extensively documented the vibrant cultural scene in downtown New York, capturing the essence of artists, musicians, writers, and performers. Tragically, Hujar succumbed to AIDS in 1987. On the other hand, Elton John, born in 1947, is one of the most enduringly successful solo artists in history. In 1992, he established the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which has been tirelessly working to end the AIDS epidemic. Since the 1990s, John has been an avid collector of photography, amassing an impressive collection. In 2016, Tate Modern organized the exhibition "The Radical Eye: Modernist Photography from the Sir Elton John Collection," showcasing the remarkable works acquired by John over the years.
