Originally published in 1972, this title emerged from three years of extensive research, primarily focused on statistical studies rather than case studies. It includes a comprehensive survey of facilities offered by hospitals for individuals with mental disabilities, as well as a sample survey of three Hospital Regions to assess the characteristics and disabilities of mentally handicapped inpatients. Additionally, two cohort studies are included, one examining the subsequent experience of patients after their initial admission to a hospital and the other exploring the subsequent experience of all initial referrals to a Local Authority service. These studies aimed to identify trends in the patterns of care and marked the first application of cohort techniques in this field within the country.

Given the interconnected nature of long-term planning between Local Authorities and hospitals, it is unrealistic to separate the need for hospital beds from community provisions. Therefore, this book takes a holistic approach by examining the current services for individuals with mental disabilities in their entirety.
