  • More about Powder Smoke

In December 1925, Detective Inspector Jim Stringer is enjoying a pint in the Parlour Bar when he is alarmed to see a man pointing a revolver in his direction. This is reminiscent of a hot day in August when he attended the York Summer Gala with his boss, Superintendent Saul Weatherill, aka the Chief. The Chief had insisted on taking Jim into a Wild West sideshow, where the star of the show was a moody young sharpshooter called Kid Durrant.

Detective Inspector Jim Stringer is savoring a pint in the Parlour Bar before accompanying his wife, Lydia, to a charitable function. However, his attention is drawn to a man holding a revolver in his direction when the couple meets at their usual spot near the footbridge. His mind wanders back to a scorching day at the end of August, when he attended the York Summer Gala in the company of his boss, Superintendent Saul Weatherill, also known as the Chief. The Chief, an avid gun enthusiast, had insisted on taking Jim into a Wild West sideshow. The centerpiece of the show was a moody young sharpshooter named Kid Durant, who spoke with a peculiar accent, reminiscent of someone who had journeyed from Arizona to Sheffield or vice versa.

As Jim observed Durant showcasing his exceptional shooting skills, he had no inkling that this would mark the beginning of his most perilous investigation yet.

POWDER SMOKE heralds the return of Andrew Martin's beloved railway policeman, Jim Stringer.
