  • More about Practical Channel Hydraulics, 2nd edition: Roughness, Conveyance and Afflux

Practical Channel Hydraulics is a technical guide for estimating flood water levels in rivers using the Conveyance and Afflux Estimation System (CES-AES) software. It includes five main components and covers flows in a wide range of channel types, from small scale laboratory flumes to large-scale world rivers. The book is intended for post graduate level students and practicing engineers or hydrologists engaged in flood risk management.

Practical Channel Hydraulics is a comprehensive technical guide designed to assist in estimating flood water levels in rivers through the utilization of innovative software known as the Conveyance and Afflux Estimation System (CES-AES). This standalone software is readily accessible on the website www.river-conveyance.net, and it has also been integrated into industry-standard river modeling software like InfoWorks RS and Flood Modeller Pro. The 2nd Edition of this publication has undergone significant expansion, with the inclusion of Chapters 6 to 8, which provide valuable background information on the Shiono and Knight Method (SKM), upon which the CES-AES is largely built.

In the realm of flood risk management, the demand for accurate estimation of river levels has led to the integration of computational methods, as exemplified by ISO 18320 (Determination of the stage-discharge relationship). Both the SKM and CES feature prominently in these procedures. The CES-AES comprises five essential components: A Roughness Adviser, a Conveyance Generator, an Uncertainty Estimator, a Backwater Module, and an Afflux Estimator.

The SKM offers an alternative approach, allowing for the solution of the governing equation analytically or numerically using Excel or the provided short FORTRAN program. Special emphasis is placed on calculating the distributions of boundary shear stress distributions in channels of various shapes, as well as developing appropriate formulations for resistance and drag forces, including those associated with trees in floodplains. Extensive examples are provided, covering flows in a diverse range of channel types, spanning from small-scale laboratory flumes (Q = 2.0 1s-1) to European rivers (~2,000 m3s-1), and even large-scale world rivers (> 23,000 m3s-1), with a discharge range spanning approximately 107. Sites from rivers across the UK, France, China, New Zealand, and Ecuador are considered in this comprehensive analysis.
