Prestwich and Whitefield, once inseparable townships, have been divided by the construction of the M60 motorway. Together, they form prestigious suburbs of north Manchester, with a combined population of around 55,000. These areas are now part of Bury Metropolitan Borough Council. In their book, authors Paul Hindle and Harry Wilkinson present a nostalgic visual chronicle of Prestwich and Whitefield, spanning several decades.
Prestwich, the older of the two townships, boasts a parish church, St Mary's, with a rich history dating back to Norman times. While the present church was constructed in the fifteenth century, remnants of the original structure still stand. Whitefield, on the other hand, was once part of the medieval Pilkington Park and was attended by Clive of India at Stand Grammar School. It became a separate local government area in 1886 and is home to one of the churches funded after the Napoleonic Wars.
Between these two areas lies the famous Besses o th Barn, named after a former local innkeeper. To the west, the Irwell Valley and Philips Park offer scenic landscapes, while to the east, Heaton Park, once the seat of the Earls of Wilton, provides a tranquil setting. Prestwich & Whitefield Through Time holds immense interest for local residents and anyone with connections to this vibrant community.
